Sama Hammurabi International Law Firm reach a significant legal achievement for the rights of Iraqi Iranian prisoners of war

Following Prime Minister Mr Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s meeting with the Iranian President, a historic agreement to form a joint committee of both Iraqi and Iranian sides to address the return of prisoners to Iraq.
The issue of Iraqi prisoners of war during the Iraq-Iran War represents a complex national and humanitarian file that has burdened Iraqi society for decades because of the repercussions of the war, which claimed the lives of many and led to the capture of numerous Iraqi soldiers in Iran. These prisoners were not handed over by the Iranian authorities to the Iraqi side, leaving a deep wound in the national memory.
Driven by its mission to defend national and human rights, Sama Hammurabi International Law Firm has worked to file a case before the Federal Supreme Court, demanding the reopening of this file, which had been closed during previous governments. Sama Hammurabi met with many families of the prisoners, listened to their stories and their prolonged suffering, and collected evidence and testimonies proving the existence of Iraqi prisoners who have not been returned to their homeland.
Mr Mohammed Al Asaadi CEO of Sama Hammurabi says ‘This legal effort has marked a significant turning point, as the Government of Prime Minister Mr. Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani responded to this national and humanitarian demand by including the prisoners’ issue among the key topics discussed during his recent visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran and his meeting with the Iranian President. This meeting culminated in a historic agreement to form a joint committee comprising representatives from both the Iraqi and Iranian sides to address this file and ensure the return of the prisoners to Iraqi soil.
This unprecedented governmental achievement reflects the current Iraqi government’s commitment to upholding justice and preserving the dignity of the Iraqi people. It constitutes a qualitative step toward achieving justice and closing this file, which stands as a truly national and humanitarian cause.’
Baroness Nicholson, President of IBBC says ‘This is an amazing and superb humanitarian achievement by Sama Hammurabi. I know how much family burials and return of prisoners means to us all’
