Mott MacDonald hold innovative conference ‘Engineering Hope, as a call to action for a humane and sustainable solution to the global refugee crisis’

Mott Macdonald held a conference ‘Engineering Hope’ on 6 June to raise the issue of how to create sustainable solutions to the refugee crisis. Globally,over 65 million people live in camps and their habitation time is over 11 years. Clearly solutions are required to address the issues including lasting and effective strategies for accommodating refugees, building a broad-based coalition capable of  implementing  the technical, economic and social dimensions and to establish a global ‘social advisory’ supply chains. A range of NGO’s, Government advisors, development experts and the media, attended the conference.

In a cohesive 10-point plan, Mott Macdonald call for groups to work together, to prepare guidelines and blue prints for contracts between players, establishing international standards and master planning for social and physical infrastructure and the process of delivering integration between refugees and host communities. And in more granular detail, the establishment of off the shelf camp designs and the creation of a pilot camp.

Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, President of IBBC, was interviewed as one of a selection of experts who contributed towards the compiling of Mott MacDonald’s ‘Engineering Hope’ report. Her considerable knowledge and years of expertise in alleviating the plight of refugees made her input influential.
