Leicester in Iraq

The University of Leicester believes in a strong emphasis on building international partnerships and long-standing academic relationships. The University’s links with Iraq date back to 2010 and have since developed a significant partnership, covering both teaching and research. Research and education links cover all three of the university’s colleges, and there exists a strong and growing presence in Iraqi Kurdistan.

One such project in existence is the partnership with the Kufa Medical School, which has ten workshops training c.200 Iraq medical school teaching staff and the university plays a key role in the modernisation of the training of clinicians in Iraq. The agreement, signed in 2012, cooperates in such spheres as visiting staff and students, split-site PhDs, academic training and development, and mutually beneficial research projects.

The context for this specific agreement between two leading universities is an impressive commitment by the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to a major capacity-building scholarship scheme of more than a thousand PhD scholarships in various specialities.

Recently there has been a steady growth in applications and registrations from Iraq for PGR, an increase in funding provided by the Iraqi government and at least 400 sponsored students have studied at the university, many having returned to academic posts in Iraq.

The university also has an existing partnership with the University of Babylon in Iraq, where it provides 2+2 BSc programmes in Forensic Sciences and Electrical Engineering, has established a project to build a Forensic Science centre and possible future local delivery of a BSc in Forensic Science. As well as undertaking a review and supporting the restructuring of the Archaeology department and providing CPD support to run a Diploma in Toxicology.
