Naseer Shamma, one of Iraq’s finest musical exports, has been appointed UNESCO artist for peace “in recognition of his commitment to support the musical education of young people in Iraq and beyond, his unfailing efforts to promote the message of peace through his performances and his dedication to the universal ideals and aims of the Organization”.

Mr Shamma will be tasked with aiding the conservation of culture and heritage in Iraq and the Middle East at a time when the region’s rich history is under threat, as well as aiding UNESCO’s fight to provide education for peace amongst young people.

The award was presented by Irinia Bokova, Director General of UNESCO to the globally renowned composer on 23 February at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

Born in El Koute, Iraq, in 1963, Naseer Shamma has brought Oud and Arabic music to venues around the world. He regularly incorporates themes of peace into his work, particularly when performing to young audiences. In the last few years Mr Shamma has organised numerous concerts in Baghdad and has founded several humanitarian associations including the “The Flower Road” to aid refugees and young persons.

UNESCO Artists for Peace are globally recognised figures who use their influence and enthusiasm to aid in the promotion of UNSECO’s values and programmes.
