Iraqi Ambassador addresses IBBC members

H.E. Dr Salih Husain Ali Al Tamimi the returning Iraqi ambassador to the UK, gave an extensive and open presentation on his focus in the UK and perspectives on the situation in Iraq and the Gulf to IBBC members. He also fielded a range of questions from IBBC members and was candid and helpful in his replies.

Issues covering pressures on the Iraqi budget going forward, means the private sector must fill some of the investment voids the government is unable to meet, which will create opportunities for private investors. Other areas of discussion covered international relations, transport and opening up flights between UK and Baghdad, the creation of railways within Iraq,  the opportunity for Iraq to broker relations between the Gulf and Iran, the good relationships Iraq has with Turkey, the USA, and the opening up of Syriah to offer exporting opportunities and pipelines to the Mediterranean. A number of IBBC members asked questions, including IDB on banking issues, Al Nessour on the development of law on investment, Al Zaman on the maritime sector.

It’s clear that while fiscal issues are constrained there are still opportunities to operate and expand in and beyond Iraq. Christophe Michels, IBBC MD, thanked HE Al-Tamimi for his time and openness, and for his warmth and support to IBBC.
